7 June World Food Safety Day

Safe Food, which does not contain biological and chemical hazards and meets the minimum hygiene requirements, is a prerequisite for a healthy and productive society. The United Nations Organization (UN) declared 7 June as the World Food Safety Day with the decision taken on 24 December 2018.

Our faculty members working in the field of food safety gave brief information about their fields of work on World Food Safety Day.

Assoc. Dr. Müge İŞLETEN HOŞOĞLU: As an industrial biotechnology group, we carry out studies for the production and purification of innovative food additives and nutraceuticals with natural, sustainable and functional properties for the food industry, using biotechnological processes. Toxicity controls of the obtained products are demonstrated by in vitro analysis and cell line studies.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Bahar YILDIZ KUTMAN and Asst. Prof. Dr. Ümit Barış KUTMAN: As the Plant Physiology, Plant Nutrition and Plant Biotechnology research group, we consider the agriculture-food-health chain as a whole, with the motto of "Feeding Plants to Feed the Future" in our projects related to sustainable agriculture and innovative agricultural technologies, and to food supply security, also known as food security. We also carry out studies on food safety. With our projects, most of which are based on university-industry cooperation, in areas such as biofortification, innovative plant nutrition products, climate resilience and abiotic stress, soilless and vertical agriculture, which stand out among our fields of work, we ensure food supply security on a local, national and global scale, and the public's adequate supply of food. we produce outputs that will contribute to securing the right to access to quality and nutritious food and thus to the fight not only against hunger but also against “hidden hunger”.

Doç. Dr. Mehmet ÖZBİL: As a computational biochemistry research group, we conduct in silico toxicity and allergenicity determination studies for the development of protein-rich food formulations from agricultural product waste.
