Prof. Dr. Levent KURNAZ, Professor, Boğaziçi University

Prof. Dr. Levent Kurnaz, a renowned researcher, educator, and innovator, has made significant contributions to the scientific community. Beginning his journey in Istanbul, he pursued degrees in electrical engineering and physics, eventually earning his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. After postdoctoral studies at Tulane University, he joined Boğaziçi University's Physics Department, where he now holds a professorship. Focusing on sustainability and climate change, Kurnaz leads the university's Center for Climate Change and Policy Implementation and Research. He advocates for collaboration among stakeholders and mentors young scientists, supervising numerous theses and publications. Leading a happy life with his family, Kurnaz reflects the joy and responsibility of being a father of two onto his passion for the scientific world. Driven by a passion to protect the planet, Kurnaz actively engages with wider audiences through speeches, workshops, and videos, aiming to raise awareness and inspire action on climate change.

In recent decades, the climate crisis has emerged as a pressing challenge, impacting both humanity and the planet. This presentation delves into the often overlooked link between climate change and biodiversity decline. It explores how rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and other climate factors disrupt ecosystems, leading to habitat loss, changes in phenology, and heightened extinction risks. Through scientific research and global case studies, we will examine how these changes affect species diversity and ecosystem adaptability. Additionally, we will analyze the cascading effects on ecosystem services, agricultural productivity, disease vulnerability, and human well-being. Ultimately, the talk emphasizes the urgent need for coordinated action to mitigate climate change effects and safeguard biodiversity.
