SUMMARY

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials formed through the combination of metal ions or complexes with organic ligands, resulting in unique porous structures.
The distinctive feature of MOFs lies in their tunable and customizable nature, allowing the design of structures with specific properties for targeted applications. Their high surface area, porosity, and versatility in synthesis contribute to their effectiveness in various scenarios.
These structures are characterized by an extensive surface area, reaching thousands of square meters per gram, making them highly appealing for various applications. The remarkable surface area of a metal-organic framework (MOF) can extend to thousands of square meters per gram, indicating that approximately 1 gram of MOF material can possess a surface area ranging from about 3,000 to 7,000 square meters—nearly equivalent to a football field. This substantial surface area enhances the effectiveness of MOFs, particularly in applications such as gas adsorption and storage. MOFs find applications across diverse fields, including gas storage, separation, and sensing, due to their exceptional gas adsorption capabilities. MOFs are also utilized in drug delivery systems, thanks to their ability to act as effective carriers for pharmaceutical compounds.
One of the noteworthy applications of MOFs is their use as catalysts in various chemical reactions. MOFs, characterized by high surface area, tunable properties, selectivity, versatility, stability, and recyclability, emerge as promising catalysts with significant potential across a spectrum of industrial and scientific processes.
