Presentation Abstract:
Even though bone is a self-healing tissue, when the injury is a critical size defect (non-union, 5-10% of fractures), it cannot heal by self-regeneration. Thus, it is desirable to create constructs to accelerate the healing process at the implant site by mimicking the nature of bone and neighboring tissues. Bone undergoes a piezoelectric stimulation with mechanical forces which contribute to the formation of electrical potentials to induce regeneration via osteogenesis, neo-tissue formation, and vascular growth. Thus, from a comprehensive view, piezoelectric materials have the potential to mimic bone piezoelectricity with respect to mechanical loading. Recently, piezoelectric peptides are gaining significant impact with enhanced biocompatibility, ultrastructural and fabrication variability as soft matters. Our findings suggest that Diphenyalanine is a versatile piezoelectric peptide for developing injectable hydrogels and bio-printed constructs for bone tissue regeneration.
