GTU Alumnus Wins Award

GTU 2017-2018 Computer Engineering alumnus Osman Süzer wins the 3rd place in the countrywide graduation projects competition

In IEEE's (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Bachelor's Degree Graduation Project Competition for Turkey, where best graduation projects by senior students from departments such as electric, electronics, energy systems, communication/telecommunication, computer, software, biomedical, control/automation, mechatronics engineering and such are awarded, GTU Computer Engineering Department alumnus Osman Süzer won the third place. Süzer received his award in the 16th IEEE Turkish Students and Young Professionals Congress.

Award-winning GTU alumnus Osman Süzer prepared his graduation project under the advisory of GTU Computer Engineering Department Faculty Member Yakup Genç (PhD). This project, titled "Video-Based Human Detection and Re-Identification System", aimed to scan and find one or more persons that have been identified before. For that aim, image processing and deep learning methods were used. The 90% accuracy rate aimed for human detection and 80% accuracy rate expected for re-identification were successfully achieved. In addition to this, a data set was composed using the images received from the department cameras. For this, one thousand positive and one thousand negative data were obtained for human detection. Also, a total of 2,500 images from two different cameras and 261 different people were obtained, and all these data were interpreted to increase the system's success rate.
