Prof. Dr. Rezan Demir Çakan has been awarded the Twinning Action fund from the European Commission with her "Twinning for Rechargeable Sodium-Ion Battery Research (TwinBat)" project.

To be led by Prof. Dr. Rezan Demir Çakan from the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering at Gebze Technical University (GTU), the project, which will last three years, aims to make GTU a center of attraction for battery research in Türkiye, particularly in the field of sodium-ion batteries. The primary goal is to enhance the dynamism of the sodium-based battery sector in Türkiye by strengthening the ties between academia and industry through collaborative efforts with partners.

Within the framework of this fund, GTU, CNRS-LRCS, TIA, and HUB will organize numerous workshops, summer schools, training programs, and conferences over the course of three years. In addition to the members of Gebze Technical University and other academic institutions in Türkiye, various external stakeholders in the battery ecosystem will also benefit from the opportunities the consortium partners offer through exchange programs.

The Twinning Action is based on the principle of pairing research institutions in "Widening" countries with internationally-recognized institutions from Europe to enhance their research capacity, science, and technology profiles. The project, focusing on both laboratory-based research and industrial-scale cell development for sodium-ion batteries, forms a consortium partnership with Laboratoire de Réactivité et Chimie des Solides (CNRS-LRCS) from France and sodium-ion battery manufacturer (TIA), as well as Humboldt-University Berlin (HUB) from Germany.
