Breakthroughs in the fields of science, technology and innovation provide countries with competitive advantages and accelerate their sustainable socio-
economic development. In the rapidly changing and developing world, it is an undeniable fact that an ecosystem shaped based on R&D, technology and
innovation is needed. In such an ecosystem, producing knowledge is important as well as turning it into social value and ensuring its contribution to regional
               development.
On September 26, 2017, Gebze Technical University (GTU) was designated as one of the 10 research universities of Turkey, as a result of the evaluation made
by YÖK (Turkish Council of Higher Education). The University thus has gained a new status as one of the universities primarily supported by the state, attaining
priority in terms of receiving support for research budgets, the employment of national and international researchers and academics, the increase of
competitive advantages over the universities abroad, and the production of qualified human resource for higher education. As a hub of scientific studies with
its current researchers and research infrastructure, GTU continues to make significant contributions to Turkey’s goals as an even stronger university, thanks
to the recent status it has achieved.
In light of GTU’s mission, values and objectives rising on the foundations of Gebze Institute of Technology, whose main purpose for establishment was providing
master’s and doctoral education, the Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences at GTU places importance on the fact that its curricula are prepared on the basis
of the latest knowledge in relevant fields and are aligned with international curriculum standards, and aims to support students’ personal and academic
development, no matter what level of education they are at. Up to now, the Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences at GTU has undertaken important
responsibilities in ensuring the development of university-industry collaboration, the increase of the scientific and technological capacity of the country, and
the sustainability of graduate studies with local, regional, national and international projects including R&D activities made possible by way of university, public
and private sector collaboration. To that end, offering of master’s and doctoral programs oriented towards university industry collaboration has been planned.
For the first time in Turkey, a Master’s Program in Glass Science and Technology, which is the first master’s program to be offered through collaboration
between a public university (GTU) and a private sector company (Şişecam Group), was started in 2015, and started admitting students in 2016.

Another master’s program, the Master’s Program in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense under the Department of Molecular Biology and
Genetics within GTU’s Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences, started student admission in the Spring Semester of 2017-2018 Academic Year. In addition,
as a first in Turkey, the Master’s Program in Metrology started education and teaching after receiving YÖK’s approval following the collaborative work carried
out with TÜBİTAK’s UME (National Metrology Institute) and Turkish accreditation companies. The aim of the program is to provide education on master’s level
for the employees of the related institutions and organizations and meet the country’s need for qualified employees in the field.
Drawing on these developments, our primary purpose as GTU is to become a research university that provides world-class education, that is in touch with real
life and empowered by entrepreneurship within the scope of the project titled “Mission Differentiation and Specialization of Universities Based on Regional
Development”. On this wise, I thank all our academic and administrative staff who have contributed to the preparation of this catalog and our graduate
students who helped shape this catalog with the scientific studies they have been conducting, and wish all continued success.
