Understanding the Structure-Morphology-Property Relations in Segmented, Thermoplastic Polyurethanes: Experiments and Simulations
Thermoplastic segmented polyurethanes (TPUs) structurally consist of alternating soft and hard segments (SS and HS) along a linear macromolecular backbone, which is schematically shown below as springs (SS) and rods (HS).
TPUs are very versatile materials that find specialty applications in many different fields. Commercial availability of a very wide range of starting materials allows the preparation of TPUs with tailor-designed properties. In this presentation a comprehensive discussion of my 40 years of efforts on the design, synthesis and characterization of TPUs will be provided. Critical structural, chemical, and physical parameters that strongly affect the morphology and properties of TPUs, which include soft and hard segment structures and their molecular weights, polymer composition, solubility parameters (polarity) and competitive hydrogen bonding interactions between SS and HS will be provided. In addition to experimental results computational studies on estimating the hydrogen bond energies and polymer morphologies will also be presented. Finally examples of several specialty TPUs which were developed in our laboratories and that have been commercialized will be discussed.
