1999 yılında Almanya, Brandenburgische Technische Universtadt(BTU) Cottbus’da, Uygulamalı Fizik Bölümü’nde, yürütülen Kimyasal Sensörler konulu(POLYMELEK Projesi) proje çerçevesinde, kimyasal sensör algılayıcı malzemesi olarak kullanılan bazı ftalosiyanin bileşiklerinin sentezi konusunda doktora sonrası araştırmalarda bulunmuştur. 2002 yılında Anorganik Kimya alanında Doçent ünvanını almıştır. Nisan 2003 tarihinde Gebze Yüksek Teknoloji Enstitüsü Fen Fakültesi, Kimya Bölümü’nde Doçent kadrosuna atanmıştır ve 2007 yılında da Profesör ünvanını almıştır.
Ftalosiyanin, çeşitli tetrapirol bileşikleri (BODIPY vs.), vic-dioksim gibi bileşiklerin sentezleri; bunların sıvı kristal, yarı iletken, kimyasal sensör, fotodinamik terapi, teranostik ve fotovoltaik özelliklerinin incelenmesi konularında araştırmalar yapmakta olan Prof. Gürek’in SCI kapsamında taranan hakemli dergilerde yayınlanmış 200’e yakın yayını vardır ve bu yayınlara 5500 ün üzerinde atıf yapılmıştır. Ayrıca iki adet de basılmış kitap bölümü bulunmaktadır.
Prof. GÜREK “Ftalosiyaninler ve makrosiklik bileşiklerin sentezi, tanımlanması ve uygulanabilirliği” konularındaki uluslararası düzeyde üstün nitelikli çalışmalarıyla 2004 yılı TÜBİTAK Teşvik Ödülünü almıştır. h- index 40 dır.
Prof. GÜREK bu akademik çalışmaları sürecinde Dekan Yardımcılığı, Bölüm Başkan Yardımcılığı ve Bölüm Başkanlığı gibi idari görevleri de yürütmüştür..
Prof.Dr. Ayşe Gül GÜREK İngilizce bilmekte ve evli, bir çocuk annesidir.
