Overview

The Department of Architecture within the Faculty of Architecture at Gebze Technical University has been offering graduate education since 1995. The Department of Architecture is located in GTU Çayırova Campus. Çayırova Campus is one of the rare examples in the region that has achieved to protect natural life with its 245 thousand square meters green area. The undergraduate program of the Department, which started undergraduate education in 2008-2009 academic year, was established within the framework of the criteria of national and international accreditation boards in the field of architecture.

In order to bring in dynamism to the program, joint workshops are organized and profession-oriented research is practically reflected on the courses taught. A holistic approach where design workshops lay the foundation for the undergraduate education and workshops are supported with the knowledge and skills taught in other courses has been adopted. The medium of instruction for the undergraduate program is 30% English. The Department aims to generate creative professionals who can produce unique works, who can conduct scientific research, who can question knowledge and think critically, who can use contemporary technology, who are sensitive to social and environmental problems, who pay attention to building-resident relations, and who can make sustainable designs. In terms of graduate education, an education model that is sensitive to social and environmental problems of our country as well as the architectural ones, that gives importance to environmental and architectural improvement and development, and that encourages questioning, research and producing solutions is aimed. It is envisaged that the ongoing students will go through a multi-faceted education process in which they can follow professional practices without moving away from the requirements of an academic education. As of 2016, a non-thesis master’s program and a doctoral program also started within the Department.

The goal of the Department is to maintain a contemporary architectural education model that will generate architects who can compete on national and international levels, who can produce and interpret rational solutions by identifying environmental, social and architectural problems, and to be in an active position in the fields of research and practice.
