Apart from building up high quality human resources, universities aim to conduct scientific research, build up research teams, provide these teams with qualified individuals and a prestigious position within the international knowledge platform, present the outputs of scientific thinking and research for the welfare of their countries, and contribute to the enrichment process of social, cultural and economic life.

Graduate education was launched in many Turkish universities as a result of the improvements introduced at universities by the Higher Education Law numbered 2547. Standing for scientific study and research teams, graduate education covers master's and doctoral programs, and is coordinated by institutes founded at universities. Institutes are responsible for offering graduate programs and ensuring the smooth conduct of research activities within the framework of interdisciplinary communication and coordination. Universities' academic performances are measured and ranked by the scientific studies conducted under their roof.

The aim of the graduate education offered in the field of social sciences is to improve personal intellectual background in different fields of study, conduct scientific research to obtain knowledge, provide effective education for a career in the industry and in management, and develop students' social skills such as communication and leadership. With that aim in mind, institutes and related departments must guide students in the master's and doctoral studies they follow, in order to broaden their horizons as to their jobs, foster their creativity and productivity in scientific and technical fields.

Today, the special know-how required by modern technologies brought along with fast developments especially in the field of social sciences can only be accessible by providing students with graduate courses and advanced research offered by graduate programs. Here stands out the importance of institutes in enriching the scientific and technological capacity of Turkey, supporting university-industry collaboration, sustaining graduate studies including local, regional, national and international projects of research and developments together with university-public-private sector collaboration, and finally, proposing and applying solutions to problems.

As an institute whose mission is to increase the quality of graduate education and raise students who are internationally competitive, highly qualified, outstanding and dedicated to become scientists and researchers, the Institute of Social Sciences aims to support qualified researchers and scientifically and technologically proficient individuals in the field of social sciences; offer new programs in line with international developments and social requirements in science; and also encourage advanced research areas.
