Students Have Their Fill of Science in OpenLab

December 17, 2018

OpenLAB, an applied laboratory event, was organized by GTU IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) on 14-15 December 2018 at GTU's Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (MBG). Students from GTU and several other universities participated in the event, where senior academics and sector representatives presented their knowledge and  shared their experiences.

The opening session of the event was a presentation titled "Formation of Non-Membrane-Bound Liquid Organelles" by GTU MBG Faculty Member Prof. Uygar Halis Tazebay (PhD). Following the session, experiments titled "PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)" and "Antibiotic Resistance" were carried out accompanied by senior teaching faculty, and a discussion took place. The event program went on without slowing down, and GTU MBG Faculty Member Prof. Tamer Yağcı (PhD) made a presentation titled "Antibody Production: Medical-Industrial Applications". The first day ended with a "Creative Idea" workshop by British Culture Branch Manager Tahir Aslan. The second day of the event started with the presentation titled "Primary and Secondary Air Barriers in Biotechnological Studies" by Ahmet Yaşar Aslan from Metis Biotechnology. Following Aslan's presentation, the greenhouses where the plants for experiments are grown were visited, and plant tissue cultures were examined. The program continued with the workshop titled "CRISPR Applications in Plants: gRNA Design", accompanied by Nicat Cebrailoğlu, and then participants visited the laboratories to discuss the findings of and share their opinions on the experiments they had done the previous day. The OpenLAB, where an environment of both social and scientific exchange was ensured, ended with surprise raffles and gifts.
