Protocol on the project for "Smart City Applications", which involves important solutions to mitigate disaster damages in cities and is to be implemented firstly in Kocaeli, is signed.

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, GTU, and AFAD (Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority) signed a protocol on August 16, 2018 for the project titled "Smart City Applications in the Mitigation of Disaster Damages", and the project has officially started. The protocol was signed by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor İbrahim Karaosmanoğlu, GTU Rector Prof. Muhammed Hasan Aslan (PhD), and Mehmet Güllüoğlu, Head of AFAD

Within the scope of the protocol, technical works of the project will be handled by GTU. A citywide early warning system will be established in Kocaeli and all the systems within the city, including gas, water, electricity and any other systems that can lead to explosions, will be automatically shut down in case of a disaster. All industrial organizations within the city will be connected to this early warning system. Also, disaster risks in Kocaeli will be examined. All the buildings constructed before and after the 1999 Marmara earthquake will be examined, and the risks they bear will be revealed. The works to be carried for the risky buildings will be monitored. There will also be activities related to the taking of precautions for the building stock in the city.
