GTU Holds Second Bioinformatics Forum

The second Bioinformatics Forum, organized with the collaboration of Gebze Technical University (GTU), PHI Tech Bioinformatics, and TÜBİTAK-Marmara Technopark, was held on 26 May 2017 in TÜBİTAK BİLGEM’s Administrative Building Conference Hall.

Bringing together the academicians in the fields of medicine, pharmaceutics, molecular biology, genetics, and engineering along with the hospitals, labs, and bioinformatics companies in need of bioinformatics for their clinical and industrial activities, the Forum laid the ground for potential collaborations, creating awareness in the field of bioinformatics in Turkey.

THE FORUM WILL BECOME A TRADITION

This year’s theme was “Next Generation Sequencing in Cancer Research” while the last year’s theme was “Ohmic Data and Bioinformatics in Life Sciences”. The Forum is planned to be organized every other year.

PERSONALIZED MEDICINE FOR EASY AND DEFINITVE TREATMENT OF DISEASES

After the opening remarks, GTU Bioengineering Faculty Member, Associate Prof. Tunahan Çakır made a presentation titled “Next Generation Sequencing in Cancer Research”, in which he gave useful information to the audience about personalized medicine, systems medicine, ohmic data, the foundations of next generation sequencing, and also Bioinformatics, DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing, and next generation sequencing in cancer research. Explaining the term “personalized/precision medicine”, Çakır emphasized the importance of this practice in terms of surviving cancer.

The Forum had broad participation, and the panels were moderated by faculty members from various reputable universities in Turkey. GTU Assistant Professor and PHI Tech Bioinformatics Co-Founder and Manager Saliha Durmuş, who made the opening and closing remarks, provided a summary of what should be done to implement current technologies presented during the panels and thanked the participants and the organizing committee.
