Electronic Nose will Diagnose Diseases

It will now be possible to diagnose diseases without having nobody take blood, make long and painful surgeries. GTU is making a project that will revolutionize in the health.

The Chemical Sensor Array Project(Electronic Nose) will be able to do the early diagnosis and recognition of asthma, diabetes, liver and kidney failure diseases through breath analysis. Therefore, it will be developed the chemical sensor and sensor arrays which are based metal oxide(low cost, durable, portable and highly sensitive) at GTU.

A study that will be first sign in the health sector with developing electronic nose was started at the GTU. The project, supported by TUBITAK, will be completed in two years.

Prof. Zafer Ziya ÖZTÜRK who is a lecturer in the Department of Physics at Gebze Technical University (GTU) is the project manager. His project’s title is "Improvement the Chemical Sensor Array for the Biomarker Molecule Detection in Breath" which was entitled to support under the TÜBİTAK 1001 Project - Scientific and Technological Research Project Support Program.

Old Methods will be Left

Traditional diagnosis or treatment of diseases is more difficult than this new method – ‘Electronic Nose’. Because it is usually used some body fluids such as blood, urine, sweat for the treatment of disease. Whereas, electronic nose will analyse gases in breath for early treatment of disease. It will be a new method which is painless and fast also it won’t require any external intervention. It is especially usefull for neotanal babies and old people because of easy to implement. Briefly, in this method, samples of breath collected from patients will be evaluated by the proportion or presence of the gases which they contain. The biomarkers are such as HCN, NO, NH3 and Acetone are defined according to the disease-specific. Sensors which recognize these biomarkers will be used the early detection and diagnosis of diseases. This study which will be the first in Turkey will enable us to carry our activity in the field of gas sensor to the health field as well.
