They Fitted Their Years in 3 Minutes

 

‘‘3 Minute Doctoral Thesis Competition’’ which was organized for the first time in Turkey by GTU was held with the participation of students from various universities this year. 12 PhD students expressed their doctoral studies to non-expert jury members in 3 minutes. The jury members of the competition were ise Journalist-Writer-TV Programmer Abbas Güçlü, Journalist-TV Programmer Deniz Bayramoğlu, Journalist–News Programmer Buse Biçer and Kale Group Vice President Osman Okyay. In the competiton, Gebze Technical University Business Administration PhD student Serhat Sağ, came in first with his ‘Development of Open Innovation Index’ Thesis.

12 PhD students from various universities went head to head with each other this year in ‘‘3 Minute Doctoral Thesis Competition’’ having been organized for the first time in Turkey by GTU last year. Gebze Governor Mehmet Arslan, GTU Rector Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, GTU Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Babür Özçelik, and as jury members Journalist-Writer-TV Programmer Abbas Güçlü, Journalist-TV Programmer Deniz Bayramoğlu, Journalist–News Programmer Buse Biçer ve Kale Group Vice President - Technical and Chemical Group Chairman Osman Okyay attended the competition which was held at the lecture hall of GTU Business Administration. Providing information about the university and the competition prior to the competition GTU Rector Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün stated that GTU is a university which provides firsts.

FIRSTS at GTU AGAIN

Görgün pointed that;

- ‘‘Putting ‘3 Minute Doctoral Thesis Competition’ into practice for the first time in our country like having represented Turkey in the international nano-cancer activity for the first time, having opened Masters Programme in Glass Industrial area for the first time, having produced miniature motors for the first time and having taken place in the formation representing our country in Silicon Valley of Gebze Technical Universiy which is a science center is an indication that it remained loyal to the university fourth generation mission.

- Thanks to this competition which we have organized for the second time today, and spread to national channels, recent scientific and technical developments will be announced over a wide area and at the same time the way for the formation of interdisciplinary student communities will be paved.

- Doctoral studies being introduced with almost an exhibition method will be another advantage of our organization.’’

THESIS IN 3 MINUTES

In the competititon held at GTU, prequalified 12 doctoral students introduced their thesis they have been working on to the jury without the use of any material other than a slide in 3 minutes. Then, having evaluated the theses, jury members gave the awards to the students who took the first three

Gebze Technical University Business Administration PhD student Serhat Sağ, came in first with his ‘Development of Open Innovation Index’ Thesis and Gebze Technical University Environmental Engineering PhD student Faruk Can with his ‘Biological Nox (Nitrogen Oxide) Expense System Development by Using Iron Porphyrin Modified Hollow Fiber Membrane Biofilm Reactor’ Thesis and Gebze Technical University Materials Science and Engineering PhD student Elif Ceylan Cengiz, with her ‘High Energy Density Li-S Batteries' Thesis shared the second place. Gebze Technical University Molecular Biology and Genetics PhD student Irmak Şah got the third place with her ‘Biochemical and Molecular Characterization of Endophytic Bacteria Promoting Plant Growth Associated with Flame Tree Isolated from In Vitro Culture’ Thesis.

A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE

After award ceremony, evaluating the competition, jury member Journalist–News Programmer Buse Biçer, pointed that she experienced a successful event and she wished that these studies would be useful for the country. Journalist-TV Programmer Deniz Bayramoğlu stated that the Project subjects are beneficial projects in their areas and said ‘‘May Allah make it easy for you’’. Stating that Turkey is passing through a very difficult time in terms of sociology, Journalist-Writer-TV Programmer Abbas Güçlü pointed that he wants this competition which he also attended last year to expand to include up to 40- 50 universities and it is pertinent to include the social sciences in this competition especially in these difficult times which the country is passing through. Kale Group Vice President - Technical and Chemical Group Chairman Osman Okyay pointed that this competition would be a very important contribution to the development of R & D culture in Turkey. 3 Minute Doctoral Thesis Competition ended with a group photo of jury members and the contestants.
