TÜBA-GEBİP Award Goes to GTU Academics

November 24, 2023

GTU's estimable scholars have just been awarded by TÜBA-GEBİP. In the field of Inorganic Chemistry, Prof. Dr. Bünyemin Çoşut from the Department of Chemistry under the Faculty of Science at GTU and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sadiye Velioğlu from the Institute of Nanotechnology at GTU have been honored as outstanding young scientists.

Under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, the recipients of the TÜBA-GEBİP (Outstanding Young Scientists) and TÜBA-TESEP (Scientific Authored Books) awards for this year have been announced. The awards will be presented in a traditional ceremony at the Presidential Complex and will be conferred by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The winners of the 2023 TÜBA-GEBİP Award from GTU are Prof. Dr. Bünyemin Çoşut in the field of Inorganic Chemistry and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sadiye Velioğlu in the field of Nanotechnology.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sadiye Velioğlu from the GTU's Institute of Nanotechnology aims to recover and reuse organic solvents extensively used in various chemical processes and released into the environment within the scope of the TÜBA-GEBİP project. This exciting research will focus on investigating membrane technologies that promise high efficiency and purity at a low cost. Particularly, the project stands out in the recovery of solvents commonly used in the paint industry, utilizing original nanomaterial-based membranes to meticulously address the separation processes between paint and solvent. This innovative approach aims not only to support environmental sustainability, but also to make significant progress in industrial applications.

Prof. Dr. Bünyemin Çoşut from the Department of Chemistry under the Faculty of Science at GTU aims to prepare porous metal-organic frameworks with controllable pore size and photochemical behaviors using photoactive materials with different photonic properties within the scope of the TÜBA-GEBİP project. The goal is to use these porous materials to produce green hydrogen through the preparation of photocatalysts. In particular, this project has strategic significance as it will contribute significantly to achieving the goals outlined in the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the European Green Deal, and the 2030 Climate Target Plan, and it also holds an important position in hydrogen-related research and development.

The TÜBA-GEBİP Award, including the Ahmet and Nezahat Keleşoğlu TÜBA-GEBİP Special Award for Pharmacy, plays a special role in promoting Türkiye in the international scientific community, encouraging outstanding young scientists, and supporting their research in Türkiye. In 2023, with a total of 34 outstanding young scientists from 24 different universities, including the winners of the Ahmet and Nezahat Keleşoğlu TÜBA-GEBİP Special Award for Pharmacy, the total number of scientists awarded the TÜBA-GEBİP Award have increased to 644.
