GTU Academics Awarded 3rd Prize in Recycling Project Competition

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Neslihan Tamsü Selli and Research Assistant Neslihan Başaran from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Gebze Technical University (GTU) won the 3rd prize in the aluminum recycling project titled "Be Part of Recycling" organized by the Turkish Aluminum Industrialists Association (TALSAD). Their project is titled "Usage and Recycling of Aluminum Dross in Wall Tiles" and they received the prize for their efforts. The aluminum waste used in the project was supplied by Vig Metal Industry and Trade Company.

The "Be Part of Recycling" project competition, which focused on the development of recycling processes for aluminum and aluminum-containing wastes and their contributions to sustainability, environmental impacts, processes, and the economy, was organized for the first time this year by TALSAD. The projects that participated in the competition, which was supported by the Ministry of Industry and Technology, the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, and the Çevko Foundation, were evaluated by a jury consisting of public institutions, academics, and twenty-seven experts from the aluminum industry. The final ten projects were evaluated through presentations made on October 14, 2021, and the winners were determined. The awards were presented to the winners at the "Recycling Project Competition Awards Ceremony" during the ALUS'10 Gala Dinner on March 3, 2022.

The goal of the academics' project titled "Usage and Recycling of Aluminum Dross in Wall Tiles" was to contribute to the recycling of aluminum waste that has reached the end of its economic life and is removed from the process by incorporating it into the ceramic wall tiles, thereby producing high-value added products using a cheap material instead of imported raw materials that increase the strength of the tiles.
