GTU Hosts 10th URSI Turkey Congress

The 10th of URSI (International Union of Radio Science) Turkey General Assembly and Scientific Meetings, which have been biyearly held since 2002, was hosted live online by Gebze Technical University between 7-9 September 2021, one year later than was originally planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The opening speeches were delivered by Prof. Dr. Muhammed Hasan Aslan, Rector, GTU; Prof. Dr. Özlem Özgün, Chairperson, URSI Turkey National Committee; Prof. Dr. Ayhan Altıntaş,  Honorary Chairperson, URSI Turkey National Committee; and Prof. Dr. Ali Alkumru, Head of Program for Electromagnetic Waves and Microwave Technique, Department of Electronics Engineering, GTU, respectively. 

The key speakers of the scientific meeting were Natalia Saidoğlu from Stellar Solutions Inc. with her speech titled "Electromagnetic Frontiers in Modern Space Industry", Filippo Capoline from University of California at Irvine with his speech titled "Exceptional Points of Degeneracy and Their Applications in Arrays, Oscillators and Sensors", Hakan Bağcı from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology with his speech titled "Multi-Physics Simulation of Plasmonic Photoconductive Devices and Antennas", and Makoto Ando formerly from Tokyo Institute of Technology with his speech titled "Multi-Physics Simulation of Plasmonic Photoconductive Devices and Antennas".

The closing ceremony of the meeting saw the announcement of the winners of student proceedings competition, which is organized by Leopold Felsen Foundation, led by Prof. Dr. Levent Sevgi in Turkey. Aslıhan Aktepe and Mahmut Akkuş, who are both students at the Department of Electronics Engineering at GTU, won the top and the second place in the competition, respectively. Berk Bural from the Department of Electric and Electronics Engineering at Hacettepe University and Serhat Dinleyen from the Department of Electronics at GTU shared the third place. 

The prize awarded by Turkey IEEE AP/MTT/EMC/ED Societies for students' proceedings towards antenna design was won by Şevval Peken, who is a student at Yeditepe University. 

During the 3-day event, which was coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fatih Dikmen from the Department of Electronics Engineering at GTU, 90 proceedings contributed by 204 authors from 51 universities and 11 R&D organizations in total were delivered. The expanded versions of selected proceedings are planned to be published in SCI-Expanded indexed “ELEKTRİK - Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences”.
