Abstract:

Nanofibers are outstanding materials with high porosity and large surface area. Electrospinning is one of the most widely used technique to produce nanofibers from both synthetic and natural polymers, as well as non-polymeric small molecules such as cyclodextrins (CDs). Moreover, nanofibers can be easily combined with other type of materials like CD-inclusion complexes (ICs) and hydrogels to achieve sustained release, responsive release, etc. Therefore, capability of electrospun nanofibers to be easily functionalized with a variety of compounds and facile production of complex structures using electrospun nanofibers make them even more attractive for a wide range of applications including food packaging and drug delivery.

This talk will focus on the recent advances achieved in the

  • incorporation of CD-ICs of antimicrobials into polymeric nanofibers for development of sustained and responsive release systems in active food packaging,
  • production of non-polymeric nanofibers from CD-ICs of essential oils for designing fast dissolving drug delivery systems,
  • functionalization of injectable hydrogels with CD-ICs of antibiotics loaded short nanofibers for localized drug delivery applications.
