Prof. Haluk GÖRGÜN, PhD (2014-2018)

With the decree published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Turkey dated 18 November 2014 and numbered 29179 and with the decree of appointment numbered 29179 of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, Professor Haluk GÖRGÜN was assigned the rector of Gebze Technical University.

Professor Görgün was born in Istanbul in 1973. After receiving his BSc degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Yıldız Technical University, Görgün completed his master’s education in electrical engineering at the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences of the same university in 1998. Then, in 2003, he received his PhD degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, the USA, with his dissertation titled “Nonlinear Observer Design for Fuel Cell Power Systems”. Upon completing his doctoral education, Professor Görgün was engaged in his postdoctoral studies at the University of Connecticut between the years 2004 and 2005.

After starting as an assistant professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Yıldız Technical University in 2005, Professor Görgün received the title of associate professor in 2008 and served as the Deputy Head of Department for the Department of Electrical Engineering between the years 2008 and 2009. As the founding head of department for the Department of Control and Automation Engineering under the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Yıldız Technical University, Görgün continued as the Head of the Department between the years 2009 and 2013. During the period he served as the head, he became the founder of programs at the department such as the Master’s Program (English), Non-Thesis Daytime Master’s Program, Non-Thesis Evening Master’s Program including Non-Thesis Master’s Programs started in cooperation with Hasan Kalyoncu University. Professor Görgün served as the Turkish Delegate for the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) in the field of energy between 2007 and 2010. Holding board memberships at Yıldız Technical University’s Teknopark, Scientific Research Projects Coordination Office, and Scientific Application and Research Center’s board of directors, Görgün also served as the editor for Sigma Journal of Engineering and Natural Sciences of Yıldız Technical University. Besides serving as the Director for the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences and Vice Rector at Yıldız Technical University, Professor Görgün was selected the associate member of Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2013. Görgün is married with two children.
