Prof. A. Hikmet ÜÇIŞIK, PhD (1992-1993)

Ahmet Hikmet Üçışık was born in Istanbul in 1945. He completed his master's degree at the Department of Mining Engineering, Istanbul Technical University in 1967. In February 1972, he received his PhD degree; in 1976, he became an associate professor; and in 1982, he became a full professor.

Between 1972-1976, Professor Üçışık worked as an assistant and a postdoctoral student in MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles), and in the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. He worked as a visiting professor at universities such as McGill University, Canada (1978-1979); University of Pennsylvania (1980, 1981, 1982, 1985); UCLA (1982); Universitaet des Saarlandes, Germany (1982-1983); and Osaka University, Japan (1986). He conducted research on topics in advanced technology including advanced ceramics, titanium alloys, aluminum alloys, high heat fatigue, biological materials, technology transfer, embrittlement problems in steel, and rolling mill simulations.

Professor Üçışık is among the founding members of Istanbul Technical University's departments including Mining, Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering, and the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He served as the President of Marmara Research Center (1988-1990), and was the Founding Rector of Gebze Institute of Technology (1992-1993). Among the awards he has received are the American Society Award for Non-Destructive Testing (1974), Canadian Professional Engineers Iron Ring (1978), the University of Wisconsin Forest Product Laboratory (1981), TÜBİTAK (1984), Japan Society for Promotion of Science (1985), Executive Board of Turkish Scientific and Research Council (1990), "Outstanding Paper" in the 10th International Conference on Biomedical Engineering (2000). He is also a member of organizations such as Gesellschaft für Metallkunde, American Society for Metals, the Japanese Society for Dental Materials, the Japanese Society for Medical Electronics and Biological Engineers, Orthopedic Research Society, Materials Research Society, American Ceramic Society, NATO Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development-the Structures and Materials Panel (1984-1994), Turkish Standards Institute (1993-99), American Association for the Advancement of Science, and New York Academy of Sciences. He is also listed in the publication series including "Who is Who in the World?", "Who is Who in America?",  and "Who is Who in Science and Engineering?".
