Prof. Alinur BÜYÜKAKSOY, PhD (2002-2010)

Prof. Alinur BÜYÜKAKSOY (PhD), who was born in Istanbul in 1955, completed his primary, secondary, and high school education at Galatasaray High School. In 1980, he graduated from the Department of Energy at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Faculty of Istanbul Technical University (ITU). In the same year, he started to work as a technical engineer at the Electromagnetic Fields Department of the same faculty. Prof. Büyükaksoy received his master's degree in 1982, doctoral degree in 1986, and became an associate professor in 1988. In 1993, he was promoted to full professorship at the Department of Electromagnetic Fields and Microwave Technology. Between 1987-1989 and 1991-1997, Büyükaksoy worked as a part-time consultant at TÜBITAK Basic Science Research Institute's Mathematics Department. He was appointed as the Dean of Faculty of Science at GTU in 1997, and became the Vice Rector in 1998. After serving four years as the Vice Rector, he won the rector elections held in both 2002 and 2006, and served as the Rector of GTU between 2002-2010. Prof. Büyükaksoy retired on October 25, 2010 at his own request.

Prof. Alinur Büyükaksoy has over eighty articles on transcendence of high frequency waves and mixed boundary-value problems, published in international scientific journals. He received the TÜBİTAK Incentive Award in 1990, and METU Prof. Mustafa N. Parlar Foundation's Science Award in 1995. He was also elected an associate member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA) in 1995 and continued to serve as a member until 2004. He is still a referee for many international scientific journals and is one of the lead editors of the book series titled "International Series of Monographs on Advanced Electromagnetics" (Science House Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan). Having conducted the founding chairmanship of IEEE Turkey's "Antennas and Propagation" and "Microwave Theory and Techniques" branches, Prof. Büyükaksoy is a "Senior Member" of IEEE, Secretary General for the Turkish National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI), and a member of the Turkish National Committee of Theoretical Applied Mechanics. In 1995, he was elected a member of "The Electromagnetics Academy" in Cambridge, Massachussets, USA. Prof. Büyükaksoy also speaks French and English, and is married with two children.
