Prof. Orhan ŞAHİN, PhD (2010-2014)

Prof. Orhan Şahin (PhD), who was born in Gümüşhane, Turkey, in 1957, received his BSc degree from the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at Middle East Technical University in 1982. In 1985, he completed his master's studies at the Polytechnic University in the USA, where he also attended for his doctoral studies, receiving his PhD degree in 1991. Prof. Şahin also worked at the same university as a research assistant between 1984-1990 and as a faculty member between 1990-1995. After returning to Turkey, Şahin became an Assistant Professor at GTU in 1996, an Associate Professor in 1998, and a Full Professor in 2003. Here, Şahin served several duties including the Head of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Vice Rector of the University, Senate and Executive Board Member, and also served as the Rector of the University between 2011 and 2014. Having conducted academic studies on areas such as transmission electron microscopy, composites, and hard ceramic coatings, Prof. Şahin has many publications featured in international scientific journals. Prof. Şahin also speaks English, and is married with two children.
