Prof. Ahu ALTINKUT UNCUOĞLU has been working as a faculty member in the Department of Bioengineering at Marmara University, Faculty of Engineering and has been carrying out project based studies with Plant Biotechnology research team established by her since 2011. Her laboratory focuses on molecular plant breeding and structural and functional characterization of plant genetic resources.She worked in The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), Marmara Research Center (MRC), Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Institute about 15 years by performing research project at national and international scale in the area of agricultural biotechnology. She worked in Colorado State University (USA) and Haifa University (Israel) by conducting pre-doctoral and post-doctoral studies on structural and functional genomic studies in cereals with the support of “MRC-World Bank Fellowship”, "UNESCO – Loreal Young Woman Researcher" and “International Plant Genetic Resources Institute Vavilov-Frankel scholarship”. Between 2009 and 2010, she served as a member of the Executive Committee of TUBITAK Basic Science Research Group. In 2009, the "American Association for the Advancement of Science" introduced Prof. UNCUOĞLU, as one of the successful scientific UNSECO-Loreal Fellow, with the booklet distributed as an article of Science magazine. In 2010, she was invited by UNESCO and Loreal as a "Role Model" for her work on agricultural biotechnology and international publications on the week of "For Women in Science Week Events" in Paris. Prof. UNCUOGLU has been serving as Director of Innovation and Technology Transfer Office of Marmara University since 2016 and Vice Dean of Engineering Faculty since 2017.


In our laboratory in Marmara University we focus on structural and functional characterisation of plant genetic resources. In this frame, we have been conducting studies on DNA barcoding and mapping. In this seminar, main focus will be on association mapping (Genome‐Wide Association Study -GWAS) that has developed into a valuable approach for identifying the genetic basis of phenotypic variation. Most traits that are related to fitness and agricultural value of plants are quantitatively inherited. Currently, there is tremendous interest in using association mapping approaches to dissect such traits. This is enabled by advances in genomic technology as well as the development of statistical models for association mapping that take into account population structure and familial relatedness. After giving introductory review on GWAS in general including key elements, experimental design, comparison to linkage mapping etc., seminar focus will be on Colchicum genus belong to Turkey’s flora and association mapping effort for morphological traits as a case study.
