Professor at Gebze Technical University, Department of Electronic Engineering, Prof. Dr. Abdulkadir Balıkçı is a scientist who has carried out pioneering studies in Turkey in areas such as energy technologies, nuclear energy, electromagnetic launchers, battery management systems, renewable energy systems, fuel cells, power systems and rail transportation technologies.
Education and Academic Career:
After completing his undergraduate education in Electrical Education at Gazi University in 1992, he received his master's (1997) and doctorate (2003) degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, New York in the USA. He worked as a research assistant at the same university between 1999-2001. Then, he worked as a System Planning Engineer at ISO New England in the USA between 2001-2004. After returning to Tükiye, he first became an assistant professor (2004-2012), then an associate professor (2012-2017) and professor (2017-present) at Gebze Technical University.
Management and Institutional Duties:
In addition to his academic career, Prof. Dr. Balıkçı has also played important roles in the development of Türkiye's energy and technology ecosystem. He served as the founding president and chairman of the board of directors of the Turkish Energy, Nuclear and Mining Research Council (TENMAK), affiliated with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey (2020-2024). As the Director of the TUBITAK Marmara Research Center Energy Institute (2014-2020) and the Founding Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the TUBITAK Rail Transportation Technologies Institute (RUTE) (2019-2020), he led critical projects in the fields of energy and rail transportation in our country.
He also represented our country at the international level as a member of the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research, Switzerland) and SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East, Jordan) councils between 2021-2024. He currently serves as the Director of the Gebze Technical University Energy Technologies Institute.
Projects and R&D Studies:
Prof. Dr. Balıkçı has led many innovative projects in the institutions he founded and managed. These include:

• Scintillator Based Gamma-Neutron Detector Prototype
• Development of Turkey's first electric locomotive E1000 and E5000 electric locomotives
• Diesel electric shunting locomotives traction system and national rail vehicle projects
• Development of 1500 HP original diesel engine
• Development of electronic control units, drive system and battery group for electric vehicles
• In-pipe inspection robots for natural gas distribution pipelines
• Boron-based hydrogen and fuel cell systems, range extender projects
• Hydroelectric and solar power plant technologies, lithium-ion cell/battery development
• Liquid fuel production from coal, hydrogen production technologies with gasification from biomass
• Fuel cell microcogeneration, wind power monitoring and forecasting systems.
Scientific Publications:
He has more than 40 articles and papers published in national and international journals, the majority of which have been published in prestigious publications such as IEEE, Energies, Actuators. Among his work topics, linear induction launchers, battery management systems, electromagnetic launchers, power electronics and renewable energy technologies stand out.
Areas of Expertise and Contributions:
Prof. Dr. Abdulkadir Balıkçı has made significant contributions to our country's technology ecosystem in areas such as the formation of energy policies, the development of advanced power and battery technologies, rail transportation systems, electromagnetic launchers and new generation nuclear reactor technologies; and has pioneered Turkey's development of domestic and national technologies with both academic and applied R&D and innovation projects.
