Sustainability-themed projects by GTU students within the scope of the "Smart Campus Project" are on their way.

Under the "Smart Campus" project, which is conducted by the Data and Digital Transformation Coordination Office, sustainability-themed student projects are being developed. These projects are designed not only based on academic knowledge, but also to contribute to the daily operations of the campus. In line with the living campus concept, student projects aim not only to present theoretical approaches, but also to produce practical and long-term solutions that are compatible with the real-life conditions of the campus.

Gebze Technical University (GTU) Faculty of Engineering's Computer Engineering students have developed sustainability-themed projects within the scope of the Graduation Project course. These projects aim to improve campus life in various areas such as smart systems, energy efficiency, waste management, and the protection of green spaces. In this context, it is aimed to plan and implement student projects, which form a part of the Smart Campus project, taking campus needs into account and ensuring their sustainability. The living campus concept ensures that student projects offer effective solutions in practice, not only in theory, aiming to make campus life more efficient, environmentally friendly, and smart. This process will ensure that the campus offers a more innovative and dynamic environment for both students and faculty members.

The projects in question and their details are as follows:

Sustainable (Second-Hand/Vintage) Products App

Within this project, Gülbeyaz Altuntaş and Osman Sarı are designing a mobile application that implements the sustainable "use-use" model instead of the "use-and-throw" approach. Through the designed mobile application, all students and staff can register as users, share the products they wish to give away, and request products they need. In this way, the goal is to create a platform that extends the lifespan of items and raises awareness about sustainability.

Vehicle Sharing App

Within this project, Ahmet Furkan Ekinci and Mahmut Esat Aksu are designing a mobile application that encourages vehicle sharing to reduce campus vehicle density and carbon footprint. The application allows users to share the location of their personal vehicles (used by students or staff) on campus, enabling them to share rides with others going to the same location. When users register their vehicles as regularly going to a specific location, they can see other vehicles traveling on that route and carpool. The goal is to reduce the number of vehicles traveling to the same location regularly. In addition, in emergencies or when needed, users can request a vehicle to go to a specific location (X) and travel with an available vehicle. This application aims to reduce the carbon footprint while increasing social interaction between campus staff and students.

Sustainable Resource Use App

In this project, Ahmet Hakan Sevinç and Kerim Can Mersin are developing an application that automatically calculates the carbon footprint in line with sustainability goals. The application analyzes and presents the necessary data (such as water and electricity consumption) to calculate the carbon footprint. In line with the university’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050, these calculations are planned to be made every year, and improvements to reduce the carbon footprint will be implemented based on the data obtained. Additionally, in this project, the amount of electricity, water, and natural gas consumed on campus can be measured on a building-by-building basis each month, thus raising awareness about the use of limited resources and minimizing sustainable resource use. The project will make a significant contribution to sustainability efforts and help reduce the environmental impacts of the climate crisis.
