A Project Supported by Kocaeli University: The Success of Our Academics Featured on the Cover of ACS Omega Journal

An interdisciplinary study conducted in collaboration with Gebze Technical University, Çukurova University, and Kocaeli University, and supported by Kocaeli University, has been selected as the cover story of ACS Omega, a prestigious journal in the fields of chemistry and bioengineering published by the American Chemical Society.

The research, with Prof. Dr. Barış Binay, a faculty member of the Bioengineering Department of our university's Faculty of Engineering, as the responsible author, and valuable contributions from Prof. Dr. Leyla Çolakerol Arslan, Research Assistant Buse Susamaz from the Physics Department of the Faculty of Science, and Prof. Dr. Deniz Yıldırım from Çukurova University, offers innovative solutions for the recycling of plastic waste.

The article titled “Design of Functionalized Silica Immobilization of PETase from Kibdelosporangium aridum: Comparison of Glyoxyl and Glutaraldehyde Strategies for PET Depolymerization” discusses strategies and enzyme immobilization methods developed for the depolymerization of PET plastics. This study is of great importance in terms of offering a sustainable model in the fight against environmental pollution. It is planned to take steps towards commercialization with this biotechnological method, which offers a solution to micro and nano-sized PET plastic waste that threatens our lives in every aspect.
