Master's Programme with Thesis Frequently Asked Questions

 

1. Can I get information about applications to Master's programmes with thesis?

The student quotas, application requirements, required documents, exam schedules and deadlines for Master's programmes with thesis are announced by the Rectorate on the university website in December and May. Applications for graduate programmes are made to the Registrar's Office until the deadline in accordance with the procedures and conditions specified in the graduate student admission announcement. Candidates make their applications electronically.

 

2. How can I make my final registration?

Candidates who are successful in the entrance exam within the period specified in the Academic Calendar make their final registration electronically. The registration process is completed with the approval of the Student Affairs Department.

 

3. Can I make a transfer?

Students who meet the conditions specified in the announcement conditions on the same dates as the graduate applications, who have completed at least 1 (one) semester in the Master's Programme at the University to which they are affiliated, and whose GPA is at least 3.00 can apply for transfer. Information about the conditions and quotas to be sought for transfer applications are announced on the web page.

 

4. How should I make my final registration for transfer?

Students who are admitted to the programme through undergraduate transfer register by submitting the original or certified copies of the documents specified in the announcement to the Registrar's Office.

 

5. How should I do my course registration?

Students register for courses from the Student Information System on the dates specified in the Academic Calendar and submit them to the advisor for approval.

 

6. Can I take courses from a different university?

Until the end of the add-drop week in the Academic Calendar, a maximum of 2 (two) courses can be taken from different universities with the recommendation of the advisor, the approval of the Programme Coordinator and / or the Head of the EABD and the decision of the EYK.

 

7. Can I take regular courses while I am in the scientific preparation programme?

In the Scientific Preparatory Programme, a maximum of 6 (six) courses can be taken, 3 (three) courses in 1 (one) semester. These courses last for two consecutive semesters.

 

8. When will I be dismissed from the Scientific Preparatory Programme?

Students who are not successful in the scientific preparation period (2 semesters) are dismissed with the decision of the EYK

 

9. I took a course from the Scientific Preparatory Programme. Do I have the right to make-up exam?

There is no make-up exam for scientific preparation courses taken from undergraduate programmes.

 

10. Can I take courses as a Special Student?

Students enrolled in graduate programmes at other higher education institutions can take courses. The application date and required documents are announced on the Graduate School web page.

 

11. Can I take courses under the International Student Exchange Programme?

Within the scope of the exchange programmes carried out through GTU International Relations Coordination Office, courses can be taken from Higher Education Institutions abroad with the approval of the Advisor and the Head of the Department and the decision of the GSAB.

 

12. How can I change my counsellor?

The student who is successful in the Graduate Entrance Examination is assigned an advisor by the end of the first semester at the latest with the recommendation of the Programme Executive Committee and/or the Head of the Department and the decision of the Executive Board. Within the period specified in the Academic Calendar, the application of the student and / or the current advisor, the approval of the new advisor, the recommendation of the Programme Executive Committee and / or the Head of the EABD, and the decision of the Executive Board. No change of advisor can be made during the semester in which the Master's thesis will be submitted, except for force majeure.

 

13. When can I apply for the appointment of a thesis advisor?

After the thesis topic is determined, in cases where the nature of the thesis study requires more than one thesis advisor, the II. Advisor can be appointed from within or outside the university staff with at least a doctorate degree with the recommendation of the Advisor, the Programme Coordinator and / or the appropriate opinion of the Head of the EABD, and the decision of the EYK.

 

14. Can I get information about the Graduate Credit System and Values?

At least 120 ECTS credits for master's studies with thesis,

At least 60 ECTS credits for non-thesis master's degree studies,

 

15. Can I count the courses I have taken before?
In the first semester of enrollment in the program (at the course stage), an application is made to the Head of EABD with the document showing that the student has been deregistered from the graduate program except for graduation and the transcript and course contents. Graduate program courses are not counted.

 

16. Can I freeze my enrollment? 
The student may be granted a leave of absence (during military service in case of military service) for justified and valid reasons specified by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) with the opinion of the advisor, the recommendation of the Program Coordinator and/or the Head of the EABD and the decision of the EYK. 

 

17. I want to freeze my enrollment, when can I apply?
With the documentation of the reason for the leave of absence, an application is made to the Head of the Department within the first 3 (three) weeks starting from the beginning of the semester.

 

18. How many courses should I take during the course period in the Master's program with thesis?
At least 7 (seven) courses + Seminar Course + Scientific Research Techniques and Publication Ethics course
At least 4 (four) of the credit courses must be taken from the program in which they are enrolled or from the courses offered in other programs under the same department. (At least 3 courses in English in 30% English program)


19. I could not give my courses in the Master's program with thesis. When will my registration be deleted?
At the end of 4 (four) semesters, the student who cannot successfully complete at least 7 (seven) Courses + Seminar Course + Scientific Research Techniques and Publication Ethics course or even if he / she has completed it, the student whose GPA is not at least 3.00 is dismissed.

 

20. Can I learn the maximum duration of the Master's program with thesis?
It is 6 (six) semesters regardless of whether the student registers each semester, except for the time spent in scientific preparation and English preparation.  The student who fails to complete the thesis study within the maximum period, fails in the thesis study or fails to enter the thesis defense is dismissed with the decision of the EYK.

 

21. Who should be the exam jury for the thesis defense?
 The thesis jury consists of a total of 3 (three) or 5 (five) faculty members, at least one from outside the university and at least one from within the university, including the advisor. If the advisor is from a different department, one of the thesis jury members must be from the department in which the student is registered. 

 

22. I made my defense, when can I graduate?
A student whose defense is successful submits 1 (one) bound copy of the master's thesis and two CDs containing the entire thesis, Thesis Writing Compliance Report, Jury Approval Form, Thesis Data Entry Form, Disassociation Form, Current Plagiarism Report to the Graduate School. The Board of Directors decides on graduation. 

 

23. When can I receive my diploma?
Diplomas are prepared by the Student Affairs Department. It is announced on the web page.
