The foundation of Gebze Insitute of Technology (GIT) was laid in 1992 with the goal of becoming a center for research and development in Türkiye and it opened its doors for (graduate) students in 1994 for the first time. With the addition of undergraduate programs overtime, Gebze Technical University (GTU) was established upon the foundations and experience of GIT in 2014, inheriting and embracing GIT's 22-year heritage. As one of the most prominent Turkish universities in terms research, GTU was designated in 2017 by the Turkish Council of Higher Education as one of the first ten Research Universities amongst the 129 state universities of the country.

Here, we would like to highlight some facts that distinguish and elevate GTU amongst its contemporaries both locally and over the globe:

• Pioneer in Technology - With its 5 faculties, 23 departments, 1 postgraduate education institute, 7 research institutes, and 1 vocational school of cyber security and its number of faculty members, GTU boasts an undergraduate student-to-faculty member ratio of 10:1. More than 50% of the faculty members of our university have completed their doctoral studies at reputable universities abroad. Moreover, the Diploma Supplement Label, which increases the quality and prestige of higher education institutions and provides international credibility for them, was awarded to our university by the European Commission and seven other universities in 2009. Thus, the diplomas of our students graduating from the university have gained universal quality.

In addition to academic education, GTU produces science and projects on a universal scale despite having a history of only a quarter of a century. In the evaluation made by URAP, which takes into account criteria such as the total number of publications, the number of publications per faculty member, the number of citations per faculty member, and the number of students per faculty member, the university is ranked twelfth among public universities, leaving behind Türkiye's well-established universities. In the "2022 Entrepreneurship Index" announced by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, GTU ranks 8th among all universities and 5th among public universities. Our university, which contributes to science in the international arena, is one of the key partners of the Bilişim Vadisi Technology Development Zone, which is set to establish Türkiye as a technology-producing country.

• Easy Commute - At the crossroads of Asia and Europe, GTU’s location offers unparalleled accessibility and industrial connectivity. It is close to major cities like Istanbul, Kocaeli, and Bursa and is just 15 minutes from Sabiha Gökçen International Airport and 10 minutes from Tuzla Marina. • Historic Green Campus - When you enter the university campus, centuries-old plane trees welcome you. A campus where you can separately experience the beauty of each season awaits you next to Hünkâr Çayırı, where Fatih Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror set up his Ottoman tent and breathed his last. Our campus is home to centuries-old plane trees and over a thousand species within its 492,139 m² of forested areas and 562,892 m² of vegetated land. The faculty buildings blend harmoniously with the natural environment, reinforcing GTU’s reputation as a "breathing green university."

• Global Network and Exchange Opportunities - Internationalization is a cornerstone of GTU’s mission. The university has established 57 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and forged Erasmus+ partnerships with 80 universities across 18 countries. As a testament to its global outlook, GTU was awarded the Diploma Supplement Label by the European Commission in 2009 and has applied for the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R) to align with the European Charter and Code for Researchers.

• Research and Innovation - Our university, which pioneers technological developments, has close relations with TÜBİTAK, BİLİŞİM VADİSİ, TSE, and many other institutions located in the same region as our university and has developed its R&D infrastructure and increased its opportunities with the protocols it has signed. This allows our faculty to work on key areas such as unmanned aerial vehicles, electric cars, biological clocks, cancer research, defense technologies, nanotechnology under well-funded calls from both the European Union and TÜBİTAK.
