Orientation Program for New Students of the GTU Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

Day 1: Opening Ceremony and Scientific Art Exhibition

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Gebze Technical University (GTU) organized an orientation program to facilitate the integration of new students into the department and to formally welcome them to the MBG community. The event, held on September 23rd, provided comprehensive information about academic procedures and departmental activities. The program commenced with an opening address delivered by the Head of the Department, Prof. Dr. Yelda Özden Çiftçi, who extended her best wishes for the students' success and elaborated on the various opportunities offered by the department.

Following the opening address, the attendees had the opportunity to engage in with faculty members and research assistants during a gathering accompanied by a violin performance. As part of the program, a scientific art exhibition was organized, showcasing images of cells, tissues, and animal models derived from the research conducted by the department’s assistants and graduate students. This exhibition aimed to provide a visual representation of the ongoing research efforts within the department and to inspire new students by highlighting the integration of scientific inquiry and artistic expression. It is hoped that this event will serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for the students as they embark on their academic journey.

Day 2: White Coat Ceremony

As part of the orientation program, a White Coat Ceremony was held on September 26th. The event was attended by research assistants, faculty members, and first-year students of the department. During the ceremony, research assistants coated to the first-year students in donning their laboratory coats, while extending their best wishes for a successful academic and professional journey. This ceremony, symbolizing the students’ formal initiation into their academic and professional careers, was a significant and memorable milestone.

Following the ceremony, a volleyball match was organized as a recreational activity for both students and faculty members. This event not only helped to build camaraderie among participants but also fostered team spirit and provided a lively atmosphere for enjoyable interaction.

Day 3: Mini Orientation

The day began with a presentation by our faculty member, Prof. Dr. Uygar Halis Tazebay, as part of a mini symposium. This was followed by a Q&A session with our distinguished alumni, MSc. Ezgi Yıldız and Dr. Sena Parlatan, who shared their experiences and insights on the current and future position of the MBG field in both academia and the private sector. Subsequently, representatives from the DLAB brand conducted a hands-on training session, demonstrating laboratory products and proper pipette usage.

The program concluded in a lively atmosphere with a live performance by the band İCAZ, providing an enjoyable end to the day’s activities.
