Gebze Technical University (GTU)'s membership application to the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a global initiative of the United Nations for universities and the research world, was concluded positively.  As a result of the application made under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Işıl Aksan Kurnaz, Founding Director of GTU Institute of Biotechnology, where the studies carried out in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were presented, GTU became a member of the SDSN Turkey Network.

In 2012, the United Nations established the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), which brings together academia, business and civil society to work towards concrete goals that will ensure the sustainability of societies, economies and nature (https://www.unsdsn.org/). Coordinated by Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Columbia University Sustainability Center on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, UN SDSN, which includes more than 3000 members from 26 countries and 14 regions of the world, aims to find solutions to sustainable development problems at national, local and global scales with the scientific and technical expertise of the scientific world, civil society and the private sector. SDSN Networks develop holistic approaches to economic, social and environmental problems and foster the spirit of learning from each other and joint struggle of the world communities. The Networks work in close cooperation with United Nations agencies, multilateral financial institutions and international organisations.

The SDSN Turkey Network, hosted by Boğaziçi University, develops data-based, reliable information, research, policy and local solution proposals to keep priority and development areas such as sustainable energy management, efficient and sustainable management of natural resources, equal and sustainable access of individuals and communities to health and education services on the agenda of the public and all decision makers within the framework of the concept of sustainable development (http://unsdsn.boun.edu.tr/). Researching the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in Turkey and the impacts of the Sustainable Development Agenda in Turkey, the SDSN Turkey Network, in addition to promoting the 17 Goals to the Turkish public, transfers the solutions developed by SDSN Networks from various regions and countries of the world to Turkey.
