GTU Department of Geomatics Engineering has 5 research laboratories where studies are carried out in different fields.
Advanced Remote Sensing Technologies Laboratory: It conducts studies on detecting changes in land cover/use with the help of data obtained from various aerial and satellite sensors, ensuring sustainable environmental management, monitoring natural earth resources and disaster planning/management.
Geographic Information Technologies Laboratory: It works on smart city applications, real estate valuation, Turkey National Geographic Information Systems (TUCBS), development of mobile/web-based GIS applications, sustainable land management and disaster emergency management with the effective use of new generation geographic information technologies.
It continues its activities in the fields of engineering surveying, early warning systems, structural health monitoring, monitoring and analysis of deformations occurring in structures and earth crust, precise position positioning methods and applications with GNSS by using measuring instruments and equipment suitable for current technology.
Investigations on different positioning performances with geodetic GNSS receivers, studies on analyzing tectonic movements at different scales, evaluation of gravity measurements, and detection of mass changes in the earth's crust are being undertaken.
Using aerial photographs obtained by conventional photogrammetry and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based photogrammetry techniques, studies are carried out on various cartography applications, documentation of cultural heritage, production of high-resolution three-dimensional models of objects and calibration of photogrammetric systems.
In addition, there are 3 common laboratories where education and research activities are carried out within the department.
Instrument and Technology Laboratory: It is the laboratory where measuring instruments and technological infrastructure used for educational purposes within the Department of Mapping Engineering are located, maintained and supplied for use in studies.
Computer Laboratory: Applied courses are carried out with IT and programming, computer-aided cartography applications, GIS, remote sensing and photogrammetric software and hardware infrastructure.
Student Research Laboratory: It is a working area that allows undergraduate/graduate students and researchers to carry out professional and sociocultural activities in their field of interest in their free time.
