Gebze Technical University (GTÜ) hosted the "Symbolic Computation: Algorithms, Learning and Engineering (SCALE)" event from August 8 to August 26, 2022.

MORE THAN 250 PARTICIPANTS FROM 40 COUNTRIES TOOK PART IN THE EVENT

After two years of the pandemic and online conferences, the SCALE event, aimed at bringing students and young researchers together with research communities, was organized under the leadership of Dr. Zafeirakis Zafeirakopoulos from GTÜ's Informatics Institute (BTE). The event was co-organized with the BTE's "Algorithms for Combinatorics, Geometry, Optimization, and Number Theory Laboratory (Alcyon lab)," the Computer Engineering Department, the Mathematics Department, and academics from other universities in Turkey and abroad. The Turkey Mathematics Club (TMK) and GTÜ Computer Society also supported the organization. The event had more than 250 participants from approximately 40 countries and received sponsorship from the International Mathematical Union, ACM-SIGSAM, the Turkish Mathematical Society, and TÜBİTAK, among many others.

As an umbrella event, SCALE includes two globally significant international scientific conferences this year: the 27th "Application of Computer Algebra (ACA)" and the 24th "Computer Algebra in Scientific Computing (CASC)." Additionally, SCALE features three summer schools—“Combinatorial Commutative Algebra,” “Finite Geometry,” and “FPGA/Verilog from Scratch”—as well as the “Sagedays Istanbul” and “Maple Lectures” workshops.

During the first week of SCALE, held at the GTÜ Computer Engineering building, invited speakers included some of the most distinguished scientists in their fields. Takayuki Hibi (Osaka University), Jürgen Herzog (University of Duisburg-Essen), and Sara Saeedi Madani (Amirkabir University of Technology) participated in the Combinatorial Commutative Algebra summer school, while Jan De Beule (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), Bence Csajbok (Politecnico di Bari), Maria Montanucci (Technical University of Denmark), and Morgan Rodgers (İstinye University) were invited speakers at the Finite Geometry summer school.

RECTOR PROF. DR. MANTAR GAVE THE OPENING SPEECH

GTÜ Rector Prof. Dr. Hacı Ali Mantar expressed his pleasure in hosting two globally significant international scientific conferences—the 27th “Application of Computer Algebra (ACA)” and the 24th “Computer Algebra in Scientific Computing (CASC)”—under the SCALE umbrella this year. In his opening speech for the event, Rector Prof. Dr. Mantar stated: “As GTÜ, we are proud to host this scientific umbrella event, which has a long history of facilitating interaction between scientists and researchers in the fields of Mathematics and Computer Science. We have witnessed research with a strong foundation and a long tradition here at GTÜ. Last week, we hosted the Summer School events and Sagedays gatherings. This week, more than 120 participants from 30 countries will attend the ACA 2022 Conference. There will also be online participation. Scientists from Turkish universities are also participating in our event. Our country has a large Mathematics and Computer Science community that embraces this event. I wish our event, which has garnered considerable interest in recent times in this field in our country, to be successful and thank all those involved.”

The ACA conference, which began with Rector Prof. Dr. Hacı Ali Mantar's opening speech, is taking place at the GTÜ Congress and Culture Center during the second week of the SCALE event for five days. Previously hosted by cities like Montreal (Canada), Kassel (Germany), New York (USA), and Nara (Japan), the ACA is now at GTÜ, welcoming over 120 scientists from approximately 30 countries in person and more than 50 scientists online. The ACA's invited speakers, James H. Davenport (University of Bath) and Cécile Pierrot (Inria Nancy), will participate in a program featuring three parallel sessions and more than 100 presentations.

The CASC conference, which will be held during the final week of SCALE at the GTÜ Congress and Culture Center, was previously held in cities like Sochi (Russia), Linz (Austria), Lille (France), and Beijing (China). The conference, with invited speakers Marc Moreno Maza (University of Western Ontario) and Michael Nikitas Vrahatis (University Research Center of Patras), will include numerous presentations on the interaction and applications of computer algebra systems and symbolic computation during the week of August 22 - 26, 2022.
