Gebze Technical University (GTU) was established upon the foundations and experience of Gebze Institute of Technology (GIT) with the decree dated November 4, 2014 of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, inheriting and embracing GIT's 22-year heritage. With its infrastructure, capacity, and academic staff, GTU is one of the young but experienced universities of Türkiye, set to become the most prominent scientific hub of the country.
In the 1994-1995 Academic Year, Gebze Technical University (then GIT) started offering graduate education first under the Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences, with a total of 80 students in graduate programs, including Electronics Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, and Management. In the 1995-1996 Academic Year, graduate programs in Computer Engineering, Physics, Architecture, and City and Regional Planning were started; in the 1996-1997 Academic Year, graduate programs in Geodesy and Photogrammetry Engineering and Energy Systems Engineering were started; in the 1997-1998 Academic Year, the graduate program in Mathematics was started; and in the 1999-2000 Academic Year, the graduate program in Earthquake and Structural Engineering was started. In tthe 2001-2002 Academic Year, the Institute of Social Sciences was established, and in the following years, doctoral programs in the abovementioned fields and interdisciplinary thesis and non-thesis master's programs were started to meet the industry's needs. As the institution's name was changed into "Gebze Technical University" in 2014, seven new institutes were established, and of them, the Institute of Nanotechnology and the Institute of Biotechnology started offering graduate education in the same year.
Gebze Technical University started offering bachelor's degree education in the 2001-2002 Academic Year under the Faculty of Engineering, at the Departments of Computer Engineering and Electronics Engineering. In the 2002-2003 Academic Year, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Departments of Mathematics and Physics under the Faculty of Science; in the 2008-2009 Academic Year, the Department of Management under the Faculty of Business Administration and the Department of Architecture under the Faculty of Architecture; in the 2010-2011 Academic Year, the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics under the Faculty of Science; in the 2016-2017 Academic Year, the Department of Environmental Engineering; in the 2017-2018 Academic Year, the Departments of Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Geomatics Engineering, City and Regional Planning, and Economics; in the 2020-2021 Academic Year, the Departments of Industrial Engineering, Management Information Systems; and in the 2021-2022 Academic Year, the Aerospace Faculty and Aeronautical Engineering Department started offering bachelor's degree education.
GTU initiated associate degree education in the 2023–2024 academic year with the opening of the Cyber Security Vocational School and its associate program in Cyber Security Analysis and Operations.
Gebze Technical University began offering undergraduate education in the 2025-2026 academic year with the following departments: Data Science and Analytics in the Faculty of Basic Sciences, Industrial Design in the Faculty of Architecture, and Management Information Systems in the Faculty of Business Administration.
Since its establishment, GTU has continuously strived to offer high-quality education and conduct impactful research. During the 2017–2018 academic year opening ceremony, it was officially recognized by the President of the Republic of Türkiye as one of the country’s ten designated research universities, attaining a new institutional status.
As of 2024, GTU offers education through 1 associate degree program in 1 vocational school, 23 undergraduate programs across 5 faculties, and 50 graduate programs—both thesis and non-thesis master's and doctoral—across 9 institutes.
Gebze Technical University currently serves a student body of 10,576, comprising 28 associate degree students, 7124 undergraduate students, 2637 master’s students, and 787 doctoral students. Its academic staff includes 125 full professors, 74 associate professors, 122 assistant professors, 126 lecturers, and 319 research assistants, totaling 766 academic personnel. |
