General Information | Bacterioplanktons are useful organisms for photosynthesis research, food industry, degredation of substances, productions of plant fertilisers, and isolation of plasmids. In my laboratory, bacterioplanktons (marine bacteria) isolated from Izmit Bay of Marmara Sea are under investigation. These bacterioplanktons are very unique and need to be identified, and classified taxonomically. Up to the date, a total of 1229 pure bacterial stains were isolated, purified, chemically and morphologically defined. Colony color of Bacterioplanktons is variable, such as white, creamy, yellow, purple, orange, and red.Since total numbers of stains are so many, we mainly focused on only yellow colored bacteria in my ongoing research project. |
Applications | 1.Isolation and purification of Bacterioplanktons on liquid and solid media, water samples collected from Izmit Bay (Marmara Sea) by using plankton net and then applied membrane filtration method. 2. Staining of Bacterioplankton cells by using Gram staining procedure and taking picture of stained cells, then evaluating as Gram positive or negative or both. 3.Observations on morfolojik characteristics on Bacterioplankton cells by culturing different types of media. 4. Characterization of Bacterioplanktons by using chemical tests (such as; Alkaline Phosphatesa, Beta Galactosidase (ONPG), Decarboxlyase (arginin-lysine-ornitin), Esculine, Phenylalanine Deaminase, Phosphatase, Gluconate oxidation, Hyrogene Sulfide, Hippurat Hydrolisation, Indol, Gelatine Hydrolisation, Carbonhydrate fermentation, catalase, casein hydrolisation, Coagulase, Lecitinase, Litmus Milk, Malonate, Methyl Red, Niasin. Starch Hydrolisation, Nitrat Reduction, oxidation and/orfermetation (O/F),oxidase, Potassium siyanide, Citrate, Urease, and Voges - Proskauer). 5. Identification of Chrinomous (Diptera: Chironomidae) larva living in Ayamama and Kâğıthane rivers (Istanbul) by using microskobic and molecular biology techniques, genomic mapping, and investigations of biological control by using Bacillus species (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus) |
