GTU Introduces a New Science Ecosystem

— Gebze Technical University (GTU) has launched the construction of the modern Central Laboratory Building, which will serve the Departments of Physics and Mathematics within its Faculty of Science.

— Designed by Associate Professor İbrahim Türkeri, Adviser to the Vice-Rector, the project will house 20 research laboratories, 8 classrooms, a computer laboratory, meeting rooms, and 66 offices.

GTU has commenced the implementation of the new Central Laboratory Building, which will strengthen its R&D infrastructure for the future and has been designed in accordance with green campus criteria.

Gebze Technical University (GTU) has laid the foundation for its modern Central Laboratory Building, a project aligned with its long-established research and development vision. Approved by the Rectorate and carried out under the supervision of the Directorate of Construction and Technical Works, the project’s architectural design and implementation plans were completed by Associate Professor İbrahim Türkeri, Adviser to the Vice-Rector at GTU. Construction officially began in May. Rising on a 7,000-square-meter site with a total construction area of 4,100 square meters, the strategic facility is envisioned as the university’s new science hub, maximizing sustainability and interdisciplinary interaction. The large-scale building, which will be allocated to the Departments of Physics and Mathematics within the Faculty of Science will include 20 research laboratories, 8 classrooms, a computer laboratory, meeting rooms, and 66 offices.

The design process of the project, which complies with green campus criteria and aims to maximize sustainability and interdisciplinary interaction, as well as its contributions to the campus and spatial organization, was described by the project architect, Associate Professor İbrahim Türkeri, as follows:

“While transforming Gebze Technical University’s deeply rooted R&D vision into an architectural identity, our primary objective was not merely to construct a technologically advanced research facility; rather, it was to design a living ecosystem that enriches the social fabric of the campus.

We deliberately broke away from the rigid, cold, and distant walls traditionally associated with laboratory buildings. Instead, we strongly integrated the structure into campus life through not only its enclosed spaces but also the open and semi-open spaces it offers. The open amphitheaters designed at the building’s northern and southern entrance gates do more than simply invite users into the building; they allow the dynamism of campus life to flow into the structure through seating and gathering areas. Thanks to its accessible and breathable courtyards, the building transcends the role of a conventional educational facility and offers its architectural character to the entire campus community.

The promenade, which forms the backbone of the design, was conceived as an urban open-space proposal that enables access to laboratories, classrooms, and offices on every level while connecting them to the courtyards.

This axis, which seamlessly links all program elements both vertically and horizontally, brings users together with the greenery and natural daylight of the inner courtyards. Providing researchers with a place to step away from the laboratory environment and enjoy a breath of fresh air, this space will foster interdisciplinary encounters and scientific discussions. As such, it will offer a completely new urban experience within the campus.”
