September 28, 2026 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations — The research, which introduces innovative solutions in the fields of bioengineering and green chemistry, paves the way for the high-purity production of noncanonical amino acids that are critical to the pharmaceutical industry.
An interdisciplinary scientific study conducted in collaboration between Gebze Technical University (GTU) and Çukurova University has been published as a cover feature in ACS Omega, a prestigious publication of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in the fields of chemistry and bioengineering.
Strong Academic Collaboration in Green Chemistry and Biosynthesis The research, led by and under the corresponding authorship of Prof. Barış Binay, a faculty member in the Department of Bioengineering at our Faculty of Engineering, with contributions from our GTU doctoral graduate Ğarip Demir, PhD, and Prof. Deniz Yıldırım, a faculty member at Çukurova University, introduces innovative solutions in the fields of green chemistry and asymmetric biosynthesis.
99% Purity Achieved in Compounds Critical to the Pharmaceutical Industry The article, titled “Immobilized Wild-Type and Mutant L-Alanine Dehydrogenase from Thermus thermophilus Coupled with Formate Dehydrogenase for Asymmetric Synthesis of Noncanonical Amino Acids,” aims to produce noncanonical amino acids (ncAAs), which are highly important as building blocks for pharmaceutical precursors, enzyme inhibitors, and functional peptides, with high enantiomeric purity (99% ee).
We congratulate our researchers for their valuable contributions to science and for strengthening our university’s reputation within the international research ecosystem, and wish them continued success in their work. |
