September 28, 2026 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations — The 3rd Workshop of the COVER Project coordinated by Gebze Technical University (GTU) took place at the University of Cádiz in Spain.
The third workshop of the “(C)ombinatorial (O)ptimization for (V)ersatile Applications to (E)merging u(R)ban Problems” (COVER) Project, coordinated by Gebze Technical University (GTU) and supported under the European Commission’s Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, took place at the University of Cádiz in Algeciras, Spain, from September 7–11, 2026.
As part of the workshop, consortium members shared the latest developments and findings from their research conducted within the project on combinatorial optimization-based mathematical models and methods for addressing urban problems. In addition, ongoing research within the project’s working groups was discussed, and views were exchanged on advancing collaborative research activities.
Prof. Didem Gözüpek, COVER project coordinator, Prof. Sibel Özkan, Research Assistant Fatih Yetgin, PhD, and Research Assistant Aslıhan Gür from the GTU COVER project team participated in the event. Prof. Didem Gözüpek, Research Assistant Fatih Yetgin, PhD, and Research Assistant Aslıhan Gür also delivered presentations.
The studies presented by the GTU team at the workshop are as follows: • The study titled “A Steiner Tree Approach to Infrastructure Planning for Disaster Preparedness”, presented by Prof. Didem Gözüpek, with the participation of our undergraduate alumna Ebrar Özkan, a graduate of the Department of Computer Engineering and our graduate student • The study titled “A Set Covering Approach to Patrol Zoning”, presented by Prof. Didem Gözüpek, with the participation of our graduate student Emre Nihat Durgun from the Department of Computer Engineering • The study titled “Battery Swapping Formulation for Micromobility Charging Systems”, presented by Research Assistant Aslıhan Gür • The study titled “Relations Between 2-Domination, Isolated 2-Rainbow Domination, and 2-Rainbow Domination”, presented by Research Assistant Fatih Yetgin, PhD
Interdisciplinary Collaboration To Address Urban Problems The COVER Project aims to develop innovative solutions in the fields of smart cities and sustainable urban development by using combinatorial optimization, graph theory, and operations research methods. Coordinated by Gebze Technical University, the project includes Boğaziçi University and Optiyol A.Ş. from Türkiye; University of Gdańsk, Gdańsk University of Technology, Jit Team., OMGGS, and Citibike from Poland; University of Primorska and University of Maribor from Slovenia; University of Cádiz and University of Coruña from Spain; Stellenbosch University and University of Pretoria from South Africa; and University of Fribourg from Switzerland as consortium partners. |
