— A project by Asst. Prof. Gökhan Cüceloğlu, a faculty member of the GTU Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences, focusing on climate change and water management, has been awarded funding under the TÜBİTAK 3501 program.

A project titled “Application of Decision-Making Under Deep Uncertainty Approaches for Water Resources Planning and Sectoral Water Allocation in Basins Under Climate Change” (İklim Değişikliği Altındaki Havzalarda Su Kaynakları Planlaması ve Sektörel Su Tahsisi İçin Derin Belirsizlikler Altında Karar Verme Yaklaşımlarının Uygulanması) by Asst. Prof. Gökhan Cüceloğlu, a faculty member of the Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences at Gebze Technical University (GTU), has been awarded funding under the TÜBİTAK 3501 Career Development Program. The project will run for a total of 36 months and will involve the project coordinator as well as two graduate student scholarship holders.

The project aims to develop robust water management strategies that can maintain their effectiveness under different future conditions at the basin scale, taking into account uncertainties related to climate change and socioeconomic developments, through the use of Decision Making Under Deep Uncertainty (DMDU) approaches. The study, to be conducted in the Sakarya Basin, will assess in an integrated manner the interactions among agricultural irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, environmental flow requirements, and other sectoral water uses.

As part of the project, outputs from different global climate models under CMIP6 will be used to assess the potential impacts of climate change on basin water resources. These data will be used together with open-source hydrological models and water resources system models to model the basin’s hydrological processes and water allocation among different sectors. In addition, Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEA) will be employed to assess the interactions among irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, environmental flow requirements, and other sectoral water uses and to investigate different management alternatives.

The project is expected to develop a methodological framework for applying DMDU approaches at the basin scale, which currently have quite limited applications in water resources planning in Türkiye, and to contribute to future water resources planning and climate change adaptation efforts in different basins by building on the experience gained through the project.
