— GTU ranked among the world’s top 100 institutions in 22 different specialties in the 2025 institutional rankings of ScholarGPS, an international academic evaluation platform. The university ranked 2nd in the world in the field of Taguchi Methods, while Prof. H. Yıldırım Erbil and Prof. Mehmet Kobya earned top positions in the global rankings through their individual achievements.

Gebze Technical University (GTU) achieved outstanding success in the 2025 institutional rankings of ScholarGPS, which evaluates the scientific performance of more than 30 million scholars and over 50,000 institutions based on publication, citation, and h-index data.

In the “Lifetime All” assessment, which covers the scientific works produced throughout the careers of all active, retired, and deceased scholars, GTU ranked among the world’s top 100 institutions in 22 different specialties. The university rose to 2nd place in the world in Taguchi Methods, one of the fundamental approaches in engineering and design of experiments methodology.

GTU’s other specialties in which it ranked among the top 20 were as follows:  Land Cover (10th), Circuit Design (13th), Geomatics/Mapping (13th), Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (14th), Plane Wave (16th), and Diphenyl Ether (18th).

Global Success From GTU Academics: H. Yıldırım Erbil and Mehmet Kobya at the     Top

Two scholars from GTU stood out in the platform’s “Highly Ranked Scholars” list, which identifies the most successful researchers. In this system, scholars who rank in multiple specialties are ranked according to their highest positions:

Prof.  H. Yıldırım Erbil ranked 7th in the world in the specialty of “Evaporation”, becoming the 1st-ranked scholar within the university.

Prof. Mehmet Kobya ranked 55th in the worl d in the specialty of “Wastewater”, achieving an important international success.

Multidisciplinary Research Power From Engineering To Artificial Intelligence

The ranking results demonstrate that GTU’s scientific productivity extends across a broad spectrum and that the university has a strong research infrastructure not only in engineering disciplines such as materials science and electronics, but also in artificial intelligence, chemistry, and business.

The university demonstrated its strength in materials and chemistry research with its rankings in Superhydrophobic Coatings (23rd), Organic Acids (34th), Glass Fibers (46th), Photochemistry (57th), and Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (86th). Its rankings in Ensemble Learning (46th), Random Forest (47th), Fingerprint (52nd), Augmented Reality (59th), and Biometrics (60th) highlighted the momentum of its research in artificial intelligence and data science.

I n engineering, GTU’s rankings in Land Cover (10th), Geomatics/Mapping (13th), Circuit Design (13th), Plane Wave (16th), Evaporation (39th), Neural Circuits (61st), Landslides (62nd), and Manipulator (Robotic Arm) (74th) stood out. In the field of social sciences and business, GTU ranked 37th in the world in the E-Commerce category.

What Is ScholarGPS?

ScholarGPS is an international scientific evaluation platform that classifies academic institutions and researchers  under 14 major fields of study, 177 disciplines, and more than 350,000 specialties.  The platform does not use subjective measures such as surveys or reputation scores; instead, it generates its rankings entirely through quantitative methods based on publication count (productivity), citation count (impact), and h-index (quality) data. In its evaluations, citations are weighted according to the number of authors, while self-citations are excluded from the calculations. The platform’s “Lifetime” category covers all academic outputs produced by researchers throughout their careers.
