July 30, 2026 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations — Prof. Barış Binay, a faculty member in the Department of Bioengineering at Gebze Technical University (GTU), has been invited to serve as a Guest Editor for a new special issue of AMB Express, a prestigious international journal published by Springer Nature. — The Call for Papers for this prestigious special issue, which will be co-edited with Asst. Prof. Yunus Ensari from Kafkas University, has been announced to researchers worldwide.
Titled "Biocatalyst Engineering for Industrial, Environmental, and Biomedical Biotechnology: Design and Applications," the special issue aims to highlight the increasingly critical role of biocatalysts in advancing the transition toward a sustainable and bio-based economy.
Bridging enzyme engineering and applied bioprocess development, the special issue will bring together cutting-edge research articles and review papers across three major areas of biotechnology:
• Industrial Biotechnology: Production of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food/feed ingredients • Environmental Biotechnology: Degradation of microplastics and pollutants, wastewater treatment, and CO₂ capture and conversion • Biomedical Biotechnology: Development of diagnostic biosensors, therapeutic enzymes, and next-generation screening tools
Featured Research Topics The special issue welcomes contributions from the international scientific community, with particular interest in innovative research focusing on:
• Computational design and enzyme discovery powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) • Directed evolution and high-throughput screening of enzyme variants • Enzyme immobilization and carrier design for enhanced stability • Whole-cell biocatalysis and cell-free enzymatic systems • Multi-enzyme cascades, pathway engineering, and continuous-flow biocatalysis
