July 27, 2026 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations — PhD students from the Graduate School and the Institute of Biotechnology at Gebze Technical University (GTU) have been awarded Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) grants under European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) to pursue their research at leading European institutions.
GTU continues to strengthen its position within international scientific networks through its distinguished academic staff and researchers. Two doctoral research projects conducted at the university have been supported by prestigious European COST Actions, expanding into international research collaborations.
Drug Development Research Against Parasitic Diseases in Italy Kübra İren, a PhD student in the Department of Chemistry, has been awarded a COST STSM grant as part of her doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. Ramazan Altundaş. Through this support, she will visit the University of Siena (Università di Siena) in Italy. Working with Assoc. Prof. Sandra Gemma in the Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, İren will contribute to drug development research targeting vector-borne diseases within the project titled "One Health Drugs Against Vector-Borne Parasitic Diseases in Europe and Beyond."
Sustainable Microbial Foods of the Future in Denmark Cansu Yay, a PhD student at the Institute of Biotechnology, has also received an STSM grant under the CA24132 – Mic2Food (Accelerating Innovation and Development of European Microbial Foods) COST Action for her doctoral research conducted under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Müge İşleten-Hoşoğlu. As part of the grant, she will carry out joint research with Prof. Egon Bech Hansen and Claus Heiner Bang-Berthelsen, PhD, at the National Food Institute of the Denmark Technical University (DTU). The research aims to develop nutritious and innovative hybrid foods with a critical role in future nutrition strategies by combining plant-based proteins with lactic acid fermentation technologies.
This dual international achievement continues to contribute to global advances in health and sustainable food innovation while further strengthening Gebze Technical University's presence within the international research ecosystem.
