April 1, 2026 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations As part of the events held for the 62nd Library Week , the personal collection of the late Prof. Erdoğan Şuhubi, one of the distinguished figures of the scientific community, is made available to the GTU family and researchers through a meaningful ceremony.
The Directorate of Library and Documentation of Gebze Technical University (GTU) celebrated the 62nd Library Week with a special program reflecting academic appreciation and remembrance. The “Erdoğan Şuhubi Library,” established within the university to honor the legacy of Prof. Erdoğan Şuhubi, internationally renowned for his work in mechanics and applied mathematics, and to pass on his intellectual heritage to future generations, was officially inaugurated.
The ceremony was attended by Prof. Şuhubi's esteemed wife Birsen Şuhubi; GTU Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar; Prof. Ramazan Altundaş, Dean of the Faculty of Science; Prof. Oğul Esen, who used to be a student of Prof. Şuhubi, as well as academic and administrative staff and many students.
A Bridge of Knowledge Across Generations: The Şuhubi Collection The extensive personal book collection donated by Prof. Erdoğan Şuhubi was opened to researchers in a special section of the library. During the program, speeches highlighted his contributions to the scientific community, the distinguished students he mentored, and the critical importance of his academic legacy for GTU as a research university.
“Libraries Are at the Core of Academic Development” In his speech, Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar emphasized the strategic role of libraries in access to knowledge:
“Although libraries are undergoing a digital transformation today, the value of physical spaces and high-quality collections continues to increase. The inclusion of Prof. Erdoğan Şuhubi’s collection in our university constitutes a lasting contribution to the scientific community. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this meaningful legacy.”
Salim Yıldız, GTU Library and Documentation Director, stated that this donation represents a significant gain not only for the university but also for Türkiye’s scientific ecosystem and future generations of researchers.
Presentation of Certificates of Appreciation and Recognition During the program, Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar presented a plaque and a certificate of appreciation to Birsen Şuhubi, while student societies offered her flowers. In addition, Salim Yıldız presented books to the Rector and the Dean of the Faculty of Science in commemoration of the day.
Library Users Recognized At the end of the event, users who made have the most effective and efficient use of the library throughout the year were awarded.
