As part of the events organized by the Department of Industrial Design at Gebze Technical University (GTU), Prof. Önder Küçükerman, one of the founding figures of the field in Türkiye, is hosted on campus. In the design talk organized by the Department of Industrial Design within the Faculty of Architecture, Küçükerman meets with students and academic staff through his presentation titled “Designing a Product for Industry in 100 Steps: Tofaş.”

Design and Production Process Explained Through Tofaş

The event, held at the Blue Hall of the GTU Congress and Cultural Center, addressed the development process of Tofaş, one of the leading companies in Türkiye’s automotive industry. The seminar provided a detailed account of the transformation from the production process that began in 1971 with the Murat 124 model to a period of international success marked by models such as Doblo, Fiorino, and Linea. Drawing on his own experience, Küçükerman explained how design and engineering form an integrated structure throughout the journey from the initial idea of a product to its mass production.

“Design Is a Strategic Production Discipline”

In his presentation, Küçükerman emphasized that industrial design is not merely an aesthetic activity, noting that production processes consist of universal and systematic steps. Within the framework of his book “Designing a Product for Industry in 100 Steps: Tofaş,” he stated that whether it is a simple product or a complex industrial output, all processes require planning, coordination, and discipline.

Using the example of Tofaş, Küçükerman explained that the process from factory planning to the final product is made possible through the harmonious operation of numerous components. He also shared his experiences regarding the institutionalization of industrial design in Türkiye. Highlighting the importance of a patent culture, Küçükerman underlined that disciplined work and a systematic approach are key determinants of professional success.

Strong Participation and Presentation of a Plaque

In addition to Prof. Elif Özlem Aydın, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, the design talk was attended by academics and students. The event attracted significant interest, and Küçükerman delivered an interactive presentation by answering participants’ questions. At the end of the event, Assoc. Prof. Ceyda Özgen, Head of the Department of Industrial Design at GTU, presented a plaque of appreciation to Prof. Önder Küçükerman.

One of the Founding Figures of Industrial Design

Prof. Önder Küçükerman, who has played a pioneering role in the institutionalization of industrial design education in Türkiye, was actively involved in the establishment of the country’s first Department of Industrial Design. Having served as a consultant for major organizations such as Paşabahçe, Chrysler, and Tofaş, and authored numerous academic and professional works, Küçükerman continues to share his knowledge and experience with GTU students.
