A project led by Assoc. Prof. Seda Çetindere, a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science of Gebze Technical University (GTU), focusing on lung cancer treatment, is awarded funding by TÜBİTAK.

Supported under the 3501 Career Development Program by TÜBİTAK Directorate of Research Support Programs (ARDEB), the project titled “Synthesis and Characterization of Polyoxometalate (POM)-Based Next-Generation Compounds and Investigation of Their Biological Activities in Lung Cells” will run for 24 months. In addition to the principal investigator, the project team will include two postdoctoral researchers and one master’s fellowship student.

An Innovative Approach to Lung Cancer Treatment

Focusing on lung cancer, which ranks first worldwide in cancer-related deaths, the project aims to develop original treatment strategies particularly against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) subtypes.

Original Hybrid Molecules To Be Synthesized

Within the scope of the research, hybrid structures combining polyoxometalates (POMs), known for their biological activities, with naturally derived flavonoids will be synthesized for the first time. The effects of these novel POM–flavonoid structures, which have not been previously studied in the literature, on lung cancer cells will be comprehensively investigated.

Advanced Biochemical Analyses To Be Conducted

The efficacy of the synthesized compounds will be tested on the human lung cancer cell line (A549) and on healthy lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5). For the most promising candidates, the following will be examined in detail:

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
Apoptosis (programmed cell death) mechanisms
Gene expression analyses

As a result of the project, it is anticipated that next-generation biologically active compounds that may be used in lung cancer treatment will be developed, making a significant contribution to the scientific literature.
