As part of the 10th National Antarctic Science Expedition (TAE-X), Asst. Prof. Meltem Çelen, a faculty member at the Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences at Gebze Technical University (GTU), arrives at the Turkish Scientific Research Camp on Horseshoe Island and officially commences field activities.

Under the project titled “Determination of the Spatial Distribution, Inter-Environmental Transport Trends, and Sources of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Different Environmental Settings of Horseshoe Island, Antarctica,” Asst. Prof. Çelen aims to collect simultaneous air, water, and soil samples from various locations across the island. The study seeks to determine the concentrations of toxic and persistent organic pollutants in these samples.

The research also examines the transfer mechanisms of pollutants at the air–water and air–soil interfaces, as well as identifying the atmospheric sources and transport pathways of the detected contamination.

This significant expedition once again demonstrates Gebze Technical University’s commitment to contributing to universal science and its academic vision of addressing global environmental challenges.
