January 13, 2026 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations The field application studies and final jury process conducted within the scope of the ŞBP301 Project V course of the Department of City and Regional Planning, Faculty of Architecture at Gebze Technical University (GTU), during the 2025–2026 Fall Semester are held with the participation of Biga Mayor Alper Şen. Evaluating the planning studies prepared for Biga within the scope of the “ŞBP 301 Project V” course, Şen takes part in the jury panel as part of the academic process.
Within the course framework, scenario and master plan studies at the scales of 1/75,000 and 1/7,500 prepared by the students were examined through the spatial, social, and environmental dynamics of the city. The projects, grounded in field research previously conducted in Biga, were presented directly to Mayor Alper Şen during the final jury. During the jury process, which received the highest level of attention from the local administration, students’ approaches to the planning discipline and their visionary proposals for the city were discussed in detail with a focus on technical aspects.
Visit to the Rector's Office Following the final jury process, Biga Mayor Alper Şen paid a visit to the Rector of GTU, Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar, at his office. During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the role of students’ field studies and academic evaluation processes in urban planning education.
Theoretical Knowledge Combined with Field Experience This process, in which academic studies conducted within the university intersected with local government experience, strengthened students’ learning experiences in the field and enabled them to experience collaborative thinking, analysis, and the planning discipline on site. By directly observing the spatial, social, and environmental dynamics of the city during the field applications, students developed visionary and holistic planning proposals for Biga.
The projects presented during the final jury process drew attention through the students’ interest in Biga, the effort they demonstrated, and their approaches to the planning discipline. These studies once again highlighted the value of university–local government collaboration in planning education.
The studies will continue in the spring semester with the ŞBP 302 Project VI course, during which plans at the scales of 1/1,000 and 1/500 will be produced. The project team consists of Asst. Prof. Zeynep Deniz Yaman-Galantini; Asst. Prof. Yaşasın Eryılmaz; Duygu Kanık, PhD; Res. Asst. Nur Kardelen Öztürk; Res. Asst. Gökçen Özalp; Res. Asst. Elif Bengi Güneş-Yerlikaya; and Res. Asst.
