December 29, 2025 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations Asst. Prof. Birgül Cansu Acartürk (PhD), a faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering at Gebze Technical University (GTU), is awarded support under the TÜBİTAK 2232–B International Fellowship for Early Stage Researchers Program with her innovative project focusing on sustainable cement production.
Asst. Prof. Birgül Cansu Acartürk (PhD) from the Department of Civil Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering, Gebze Technical University (GTU), has been deemed eligible for support within the scope of the “2232–B International Fellowship for Early Stage Researchers Program” administered by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK).
Prof. Acartürk’s supported project, titled “Revolutionizing Green Cement: Optimizing Biogenic Calcium Carbonate and Natural Pozzolan Utilization for Sustainable Cements,” is centered on environmental sustainability in the construction sector. The study aims to develop solutions for environmentally friendly cement production processes by optimizing the use of biogenic calcium carbonate and natural pozzolans.
Under the project, the feasibility of using biogenic calcium carbonate produced through microbial processes and pozzolans obtained from Türkiye’s natural resources as alternatives to limestone and clinker in conventional cement systems will be investigated. This research aims to develop innovative material solutions to reduce carbon emissions resulting from cement production and use. The research outcomes are expected to contribute to both academia and industry in the fields of sustainable construction materials and low-carbon cement technologies. The studies to be conducted by Prof. Acartürk at GTU support the university’s sustainability-oriented research vision. |
