February 27, 2025 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations Advancing technology and changing lifestyles turn excess weight and obesity into a global public health problem. In order to combat this significant issue and promote awareness of healthy living, Gebze Technical University launches the Individual Nutrition Counseling and Dietary Services Unit for its students and employees.
Recent studies show that a high Body Mass Index (BMI ≥25 kg/m²) increases the risk of many chronic diseases, ranging from heart disease to cancer, and leads to millions of deaths each year. National data also reveal the seriousness of the problem: Approximately 65% of individuals aged 15 and over in Türkiye are overweight or obese. Even among university students, this rate ranges between 15% and 25%. In addition, the widespread adoption of desk-based work has made weight management more difficult for office employees as well.
A Pioneering Step in Preventive Health Informed by these critical findings, GTU aims to improve the overall health status of the campus community. A designated expert dietitian will provide scientifically based, personalized nutrition guidance tailored to university students and staff. The primary objective of the unit is to raise awareness of chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, and to help individuals develop sustainable, healthy eating habits.
The Nutrition Counseling and Dietary Services Unit is expected to make a significant contribution by reducing health risks among both the young population and working staff, thereby supporting a more productive life and an improved quality of life. |
